We spend our minutes, days, weeks, years…lives taking in and breathing out shallow breaths and then we wonder why we are so dang stressed out, tired and sick. Breathing is supposed to be part of our unconscious thought, but the hectic lives that we lead cause us to alter those precious breaths we take. We make them ineffective. This is not how we were designed to be.
We need to train ourselves to mindfully breathe.
With conscious and deep breathing, we have the ability to:
- Take away pain
- Improve blood flow
- Sleep Better
- Calm anxiety and reduce stress
- Improve your immunity
- Reduce inflammation
- Quiet your mind
- Focus better
- Lower your heart rate
- Detoxifies your body
- Decrease blood pressure
All of these things without the use of one single pill. Just by breathing. We just need to pause long enough to do it. It only takes 5 minutes a day. That is all we need. Five minutes to change our lives.
Deep breathing has become a part of my every day routine. There are so many apps that you can download nowadays (My faves are iBreathe and Breathing apps for iPhone) that will help guide you. There are also different techniques that you will learn through them. I also highly recommend the book, Breath, by James Nestor. It goes through in detail the benefits and techniques that are out there.
So the next time you are sitting at work all stressed out, pay attention to your breath. I will bet you it is shallow and quick. Stop and pay attention to it during the day. You will be surprised at what a crappy breather you are! Ha! I know I did. Now that I pay attention to it, I purposely deep breathe all throughout the day. I feel so much better and you will too.
